Tacoma Mountain Rescue

Mountian Rescue Incident

Grant, State
2008-04-20

Mission Report by Tyler Severy

While Rock Climbing in Vantage my friend Glenn fell to the ground and shattered his ankle.  Our initial hopes of a walk out were quickly crushed by the swelling.  I activated 911 and gathered addtional people (which were in short supply mid week).  I splinted Glenn and made him comfortable as possible.  When GCFD showed up I briefed them on my plan to drag him in the litter down the trail to a low angle area for the 500 plus foot lower to the valley floor.  I was lucky when a couple Central Pierce FD guys showed up as they were part of the Tech rescue team.  I tasked them with building the main and belay systems while I focused on getting Glenn down the trail in the litter.  It was a successfull operation that took about 7 hours from the time of the fall to the hospital.  Lots of help from bystanders and a willingness to learn from the GCFD.
